The title of this page is slightly misleading because the way that odds go, there probably are some locations on earth where there isn't gold. That said, gold is present nearly everywhere. And by that I mean in the ground, in the water, that sort of thing. Not referring to the 14k gold jewelry you have.
The methods I'll be discussing I have used myself and are very effective.
One method that works very well is the magnetic sluicebox. Many times prospectors are after this big valuable nuggets but in reality there is a lot more small gold. Trick is to find a way to recover that small gold that is more efficient than panning or sluicing through it. To see if this method would work all you have to do is pan a sample and stick a magnet in there to see if anything sticks to it. If it does then you have a few options to get started. First is you can make your own magnet sluicebox which is pretty cheap, especially if you already have a sluicebox. If you don't have a sluicebox you can make one or buy one.
You can add magnetic sluicing capability to any sluice box without affecting the normal function. Go to a sign shop in your neighborhood and purchase a few square feet of magnetic tape and simply fit it to the bottom of your sluice using a strong glue. It'll last a long time.

You run a magnetic sluice like you would a normal sluicebox except the clean-up is different and actually a lot easier and quicker. A paint scraper is what I highly recommend. The metal is not to rigid and is still strong enough to scrape the magnetic sands off your magnet sluice.
What happens is the magnetic sands are held to the box and they themselves trap the gold. It's a wickedly efficient way to cut-to-the-chase. Here is a video of a CleanGold sluice in action.

The other method is normal sluicing. There are places where a magnetic sluice simply won't work. But if you have a sluicebox that you've converted then you're all set! I watch a lot of new prospectors with their new sluiceboxes just dumping material straight in of all sizes. Then it builds up and they lose a lot of gold! Buy a 1/4 classifying screen and classify everything before running it. Your sluice needs to be angled at 1 inch per foot. So if you have a four foot sluice the front needs to drop four inches.
I assure you this will capture a lot more gold for you and you can do it on a very small budget.
